January Group Show at Shift

In January 2012 artists from Shift Collaborative Studio will come together to share interpretations of the theme “shift”. With references from a wide range of possibilities — the shift key; a shifty character; shapeshifting; a shift in perspective — the exhibition explores what it means to be a member of Shift Collaborative Studio. (Re)introducing ourselves to the Seattle arts community, this first show in the 2012 calendar of exhibitions will feature original work in a variety of media, showcasing the shifting practices and possibilities of the collective.

Appealing during the season of little light, a shift was made in my encaustic work from two dimension solid images to working with light and hollow translucent forms. In this piece, “lightshift”,apparent symbolism on the lantern of warm light are nonsensical shapes from a sketch I have made for a two dimensional mural piece, here scattered much as light from the hollow of the form and through the translucent rice paper are dispersed and reflected in the wall of the studio as the light shifts to that surface

Shift Collaborative Studio is pleased to present a showing of Jo Moniz’ encaustic and mixed media works.  Fascinated with island life, Jo’s recent encaustic paintings have focused on exploration of rich oceanic and island life forms. The works are created by layering sumptuous coats of rich beeswax encaustic.  Ethnic patterning produced by island peoples is an inspiration for the abstracted shapes which also appear in her work.

Jo Moniz is a visual artist living in Seattle, Washington.  She also holds Washington and Hawaii architectural licenses. For more information about the artist, please visit:  www.jomoniz.com
